It is with the utmost humility that Jean-Marc Dermesropian, a native of Marseille, has just presented his tribute to Pierre Perret.
The songs were chosen with the utmost care, clearly reflecting a perfect understanding of the work of one of the finest craftsmen of French chanson. It was, however, a perilous undertaking, judging by the few performers who had dared to attempt it until then. A bold gamble aimed at reinterpreting without betraying the originals. Jean-Marc Dermesropian rose to the challenge, achieving an unexpected success that drew this glowing comment from our national treasure Pierrot: “We really can’t afford to overlook a guy of this caliber!”
Without orchestration, presented in its raw form, Perret’s work reveals its relevance, from “Dépêche-toi mon amour” to “Ma p’tite Julia,” including “Lily” and “Pépé la Jactance.” Dermesropian is convinced of the sense of calm and critical insight that songs, as interpreted by the classics, can bring.
